Around a third of all food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted from farm to fork. The environmental, social and economic impacts of this are huge, which is why we are committed to reducing food waste in Arla. These initiatives tie directly into our commitment and contribution to the UN Sustainable Development Goal 12.3, which is to halve food waste at retail and consumer level and to reduce it as much as possible in the rest of the food value chain by 2030.
Reducing food loss and waste is a “triple win.” Reductions can save money for farmers, companies, and households. Wasting less means feeding more. And reductions alleviate pressure on climate, water, and land resources. In their 2019 report on climate change and land use, the IPCC stress reduction of food loss and waste as a climate change mitigation measure that provides synergies with food security and land use.
At Arla Foods, we have set the target of reducing food waste in our own production chain by 50% by 2030, from a 2015 baseline. At the same time, we play a vital role to help consumers to reduce the amount of food that is thrown away by e.g. giving them tips and tricks for using leftovers and weekly dinner plans in our online recipes, designing packaging, which is easy to fold and fully empty as well as offering different package sizes to enable consumers to match their purchase with their needs.
Now, we are seeking creative ideas on how we can further improve and contribute to reducing the waste of our products. That means interacting with suppliers, start-ups and entrepreneurs for solutions which can impact food waste at production level as well as with customers (i.e. retailers) and not least consumers.
We are looking for solutions in the following areas:
1. Extending shelf life of products in a natural and healthy way.
2. Packaging solutions which can extend shelf life or which address smaller portion sizes, without adding complexity or reducing sustainability.
3. Solutions which allow us to reduce food waste with retailers and wholesalers
4. Consumer facing food waste reduction ideas, including apps and platforms where Arla could participate
